Implantable Device for Sleep Apnea

Patients who have tried other treatments for sleep apnea without success may benefit from a new treatment therapy. Inspire® Upper Airway Stimulation therapy uses an implantable device to treat symptoms.

How it works

Before going to bed, the patient turns on the device with a small handheld remote. While the patient is sleeping, the device monitors each breath he or she takes. Mild nerve stimulation moves the tongue and other muscles out of the airway, allowing the patient to breathe.

The Inspire® system consists of a device powered by a small battery, which is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through three small incisions. This is an outpatient procedure and most patients return home the same day and take over-the-counter pain medications as needed.

Who is a candidate?

Inspire may be an option for patients who are:

• Diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
• Unable to use or get benefit from CPAP
• Not obese
• Age 22+
